Munster bid for Hughes

Dessie Hughes is gunning for glory with Sarteano and Montero in the Munster National at Limerick on Sunday.

Both horses have had the benefit of a run already this autumn, Montero being prominent for some way in the Kerry National and Sarteano finishing in second place at Navan.

"The two of them run on Sunday," said the Kildare trainer. "Sarteano ran well in Navan and the other fellow ran a good race in the Kerry National.

"I reckon Roger (Loughran) will be on Sarteano this time and Bryan Cooper will ride the other horse."

Meanwhile, Godolphin duo Grand Vent and Shooting Gallery failed to land a blow as Maxios claimed a narrow win in a tight finish to the Prix Thomas Bryon at Saint-Cloud.

Mahmood Al Zarooni saddled Sandown maiden winner Shooting Gallery, while Andre Fabre's Grand Vent was making his debut for Sheikh Mohammed's operation.

The pair were settled in behind as Private Jet cut out much of the running, but neither could pick up along the straight.

Private Jet put in a bold performance from the front, but Christophe Lemaire and the Jonathan Pease-trained Maxios finished fast to claim Group Three honours on the line.

Grand Vent filled third spot, with Shooting Gallery a never-nearer fourth.
