McGarvey can stretch the Field at Thurles
Thurles on Saturday is a rare thing and the featured Listed Pierce Molony Memorial Novice Chase honours the late, much-loved racecourse manager at the track.
Great Field could make it three from three over the larger obstacles under Jody McGarvey. JP McManus' charge is a livewire, attacking his obstacles under front-running rides. He can make mistakes but, if he puts in his usual effort, Diamond King may not be able to reel him in.
The Enjoy White Gypsy @ Finns Borrisoleigh Hurdle is another event replete with good animals. The enigmatic Open Eagle returns after a year and can be erratic at his hurdles so preference is for Gordon Elliott's Midnight Escape.
Sandra Hughes had no luck at Cheltenham but has prospects of a double today. Giant Spirit has plenty going for him in the opening maiden hurdle under the excellent Conor Brassil, one of the best riders in a race restricted to conditionals.
Stablemate Art Of Payroll is taken to follow up in the maiden chase. He stays the trip and, while it is a bit frustrating that he has gone so long without winning, he is a sound jumper and much more straightforward than Dicosimo.
Sister Sarah is a hopeful choice in the staying handicap hurdle for Peter Fahey, Zekarya can strike for the in-form JJ Slevin and trainer Joseph O'Brien, while the Robbie McNamara-trained Dasmyhoss has bright prospects in the finale.
Downpatrick hosts its showpiece fixture tomorrow, with local hope Topper Thornton a speculative pick for Colin McBratney in the Toals Bookmakers Ulster National. Another Co Down-trained horse, I'm An Izz Wizz, gets the nap vote for Liam Lennon.
