Martin's 'Magic' spells trouble for Kilbeggan rivals
The 33/1 victory of Acclamatio may have been unexpected at Killarney on Tuesday but it was a timely one for Tony Martin.
In around 10 weeks, the barn had enjoyed just one winner, but Martin believes that his steeds are coming right just at the right time with a view to Galway and the later festivals. And Phil's Magic can advertise the stable's resurgence by taking the Midlands National at Kilbeggan.
Martin has never won the race but, with Donagh Meyler claiming 3lb, Phil's Magic will feel just a modest weight burden here, and he is not long with his new stable, having left the Sandra Hughes yard. He looks a well-treated horse.
Well-backed The Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey Handicap Hurdle has a nice pot up for grabs and Mezajy can prove the answer. He lacks a gear but was well-backed at Wexford and just found one too good, with trainer Denis Hogan among the winners.
Willie Mullins provides at least two short-price fancies difficult to take on. Mystic Theatre must give the consistent Gracemount 8lb in the opening Tom McCormack Memorial Cup Mares Maiden Hurdle, yet a clear round should see her home.
The nap vote, meanwhile, goes to stablemate Screaming Rose, also the mount of Paul Townend, in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Steeplechase. The step up in trip is a major plus for the Darsi mare, which shaped well on her chase debut at Tramore.
