Lynch leads way for 'A' team
IRISH teams finished joint-third in the Europe Division 1 Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup at La Baule in France and seventh at the Europe Division 2 qualifier in Odense, Denmark yesterday.
The 'A' team at La Baule were chasing points towards the Furusiyya Final which takes place in Barcelona in October and were already lying joint-third at the halfway stage.
Denis Lynch opened with a superb clear from the big-jumping All Star while Cameron Hanley's Antello Z had four faults at the first part of the double first time out. Cian O'Connor's Quidam's Cherie lowered the following oxer to add another four when Billy Twomey's two fences on the floor with Diaghilev were the discard.
O'Connor and Twomey were both clear second time out but another four had to be added when Lynch and Hanley each knocked a pole at their second attempt. The finishing total of 12 left Robert Splaine's side on level pegging with the British while Belgium slotted into runner-up spot behind the winners from France.
The team at Odense weren't in the race for points but, from 13 nations, qualified for the second round when joint-fifth at the halfway stage.
Thomas Ryan produced a second four-fault effort while Michael Duffy also matched his first-round score of eight. Captain Michael Kelly produced the only Irish clear in the first round with Annestown, but picked up four faults second time out while Niall Talbot retired with Nicos de la Cense in both rounds to leave the final total at 28 faults.
