Lucky escape for Smullen after fall
THERE have been plenty of thrills and spills on the level already this week and the trend continued in the fillies maiden at Ballinrobe.
Pat Smullen was fortunate to escape a bad injury after Late Rosebud hit the deck when trying to mount a challenge between the Kevin Prendergast-trained Daymoona and Pastiches just over a furlong out. After Late Rosebud crashed to the ground, she brought down Ronan Whelan's mount Balmont Belle.
All horses and riders were given the all-clear afterwards, but Smullen did give up his remaining ride. After the drama, Daymoona quickened to beat Pastiches by two-and-a-half lengths and there was no change after a stewards' inquiry.
Air Chief struck for the father- and-son team of Emmet McNamara Snr and Jnr in the staying handicap as the top weight got the better of Boxer Bear by a length-and-a-half, while Longford trainer and former jump jockey Paul Flynn showed his riding skills on the Flat when partnering The Ring Is King (6/1) to victory in the Eamon Sheridan Plant Hire Handicap.
Conor O'Dwyer sent out the blinkered Ebazan to capture the maiden hurdle under Denis Hogan.
