Jockey Shane Prendergast has come out of an induced coma following a fall from his horse in Tipperary last Sunday.

The 19-year-old was racing at an amateur point-to-point event in Ballingarry, Co. Tipperary yesterday when he fell and injured his head.

He was then airlifted to the Midlands Regional hospital in Tullamore.

Independent.ie has learned that the young man suffered a head injury and several fractured vertebrae.

"In addition to bruising to his brain, Prendergast suffered fractures to his T6 and T7 vertebrae and will require surgery. He is expected to be transferred to the Mater Hospital in Dublin within the next few days," said Turf Club chief medical officer Dr Adrian McGoldrick.
