23-year-old Brendan McDonagh lost his right foot in a horrific motorbike accident while on holidays in Thailand.

Brendan from Knockerasser, Moycullen in Co Galway had stopped off in Koh Samui after spending two years as a work rider in Australia.

He had hired a motorcycle and was riding it when he was involved in a road traffic accident.

He was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable to save his right foot and have also operated on a severely broken right arm and damaged shoulder.

He also sustained nerve damage to his right side and also has a significant injury to his jaw.

Brendan had ridden for a number of trainers including Muirdeach Kelly, Paul Murphy, Sean Dolan and John Monroe.

He had ridden for a number of stables in Australia and was planning to work as a jockey in England when he returned.

The Irish Consulate in Bangkok is liaising with the McDonagh family.
