Impressive Giovanni hits mark for O'Brien on Dundalk debut
Giovanni Boldini entered the betting for next season's 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket with a smooth debut success at Dundalk.
Aidan O'Brien's juvenile is highly regarded at home and he was duly sent off at 1/3 in a three-runner conditions event over seven furlongs. The War Front colt was initially dropped in last by Joseph O'Brien and moved sweetly through the early stages.
O'Brien Jnr let out an inch of rein a furlong and a half out and, while he momentarily took his time to gather in leader Atlantic Sea, the favourite gradually found his stride. The winning rider said: "He was a little slowly away but relaxed well. He's a lovely horse on that fast ground."
Stan James cut the winner to 25/1 from 33/1 for the 2,000 Guineas.
Trainer Jim Bolger and son-in-law Kevin Manning combined for a double, which was completed in the finale by Vasanta Navaratri.
Bolger's charge (6/4 favourite) and Sharon Dunphy's Like A Diamond dominated the market and the race as they went clear of their rivals early in the straight.
But once Manning sent Vasanta Navaratri to the front over a furlong out, the market leader kept going for a length-and-three-parts win over Like A Diamond.
The Coolcullen partnership had earlier struck with Star Power, which recorded his third victory in four outings when edging out Carvelas by a head in the two-mile handicap.
