Heirloom shows worth with late surge

Thomas Kelly

Heirloom collared Todd late on to take the Next Meeting Gowran Park October 4th & 5th Handicap at the County Kilkenny track for the Aidan O'Brien team.

Sent off the 2/1 favourite to make amends for a Leopardstown defeat last time, the progressive young stayer had to pull out the stops as Todd showed no signs of stopping in his attempt to lead all the way in first-time blinkers.

Joseph O'Brien galvanised the three-year-old to lead close home to win by a length, with Encrypted Message in third and Feile Na Mban the disappointment of the race in fifth.

O'Brien completed a double when he squeezed through a gap on Eoin Doyle's top-weight Days Ahead (10/1) in the Goresbridge Handicap and kept him going strongly to withstand Mahrajaan by half a length in a thrilling finish.

The Ballydoyle team introduced £185,000 purchase Craftsman in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden and the juvenile was sent off the 11/4 favourite.

But he could not quite cope with the experienced Warbird (7/2), despite taking a marginal advantage in the straight.

The winner rallied under Shane Foley and finished half a length in front.
