ST NICHOLAS ABBEY has suffered a serious setback after undergoing complex surgery on a life-threatening pastern fracture, which he suffered on the gallops on Tuesday.

The Aidan O'Brien-trained star colt, a six-time Group One winner who has career earnings of £4,954,590, fell ill with a bout of serious colic on Thursday night, prompting further emergency surgery yesterday.

As the most successful son of Montjeu, which died prematurely last year at the age of 16, St Nicholas Abbey has enormous worth as a future stallion to Coolmore.

The six-year-old is also a hugely popular horse, having bounced back from early disappointments to fulfil the prodigious potential that he showed as a juvenile.
