Festive washout for Ffos Las and Huntingdon
Stormy weather across Britain has taken its toll on the festive racing programme, with the meetings scheduled for Ffos Las and Huntingdon today abandoned.
Ffos Las in Wales was the first to go due to waterlogging. General manager Tim Long inspected the track at 8.0am yesterday and found the course to be unraceable after heavy rain throughout Monday.
"We had 22mm of rain in total and that left the ground completely saturated," he said. "Even with a dry forecast, I'm sure it would not dry out in time."
The situation changed rapidly for Huntingdon with the first inspection planned for 8.0am yesterday. That was brought forward to midday on Tuesday but by 11.30am the decision had already been taken.
Clerk of the course Sulekha Varma said: "The water is flowing in quite quickly now. It has started to come on to the track and the stables are already gone."
There will be an inspection at Towcester at 7.30. The residual standing water on the track was beginning to recede yesterday.
