Famous names continue to please

With no Sea The Stars to get in their way, Rip Van Winkle and Fame And Glory bagged three more Group Ones between them, and it was confirmed recently that the latter will race on as a five-year-old.

Being an Irish Derby winner whose four Group One victories include one at two, three and four years old, that represents a welcome break from normal Coolmore practice. However, it was Dermot Weld's (pictured) stalwarts that provided some of the most memorable moments of the summer. Famous Name won four at five years old, while at The Curragh in June, the game mare Chinese White departed for the breeding shed at the same age, having finally captured that elusive Group One in the Pretty Polly Stakes.

A week earlier, the year-older Rite Of Passage had inched home in the Ascot Gold Cup after a brilliant tussle with Age Of Aquarius. And in the early hours of next Tuesday, Profound Beauty, also six, will bid to secure Weld a third Melbourne Cup.
