Elcanos has quality to defy top weight in Navan feature

TONY MARTIN will be looking to Elcanos to defy top weight in the featured 2011 Navan Membership Novice Handicap Hurdle in the opening session of the venue's two-day meeting today.

The gelding should be full of himself after breaking his duck at Fairyhouse last month and a 10lb rise for that success may not be enough to stop him -- particularly with conditions likely to suit again.

Another which enjoys testing ground is Shorecliffe King. He looks sure to play a part after filling the runner-up spot on his last three starts, while Tramore winner Givemeabuzz also arrives in form.

The Garlow Cross Handicap Hurdle sees Odonimee bid to complete a double following his gutsy success over two miles at the same venue earlier this month.

He has an 8lb higher mark to overcome, but a return to two-mile-four should suit -- just as it did for Quartetto when Mervyn Torrerns' charge went very close at Down Royal in his latest run. The seven-year-old loves the mud too.

Up The Beat found one too good at Thurles last month and he'll be looking to improve in the Course Signage At Navan Maiden Hurdle.

The Willie Mullins team is in fine form and further improvement can realistically be expected from this inexperienced six-year-old.

However, Coolamundra is also moving in the right direction now and doesn't have much to find on his second-place finish over two-mile-seven here last time out.
