Six of the best
St Patrick's Day celebrations began early at Cheltenham yesterday when Irish-trained horses won an incredible six races, with Sizing Europe's bold jumping display in the Queen Mother Champion Chase a scintillating highlight on a day that saw the raiders' haul for the week hit a massive nine.
With two days still to go, the Festival record of 10 Irish winners is well within reach, and a remarkable statistic revealed that every one of the seven winners on yesterday's card were bred and began their racing careers on Irish soil.
For the patriotic punter, it would have proved a profitable afternoon's gambling, although some of the winners were hard to find. One lucky speculator, who staked just £30 on a Super Yankee in a Totesport betting shop at Prestbury Park, netted £38,500 when four of his selections came in. Nice work if you can get it.
