Rainbow to show true colours

Julian Muscat

The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy Chase (2.05) presents a dilemma beyond the annual requirement to find the winner in order to avoid dismissal.

Only one horse has been advised ante-post ahead of Cheltenham: Finian's Rainbow at 12/1 in this space on December 4.

Soon after, however, this promising young horse threw in a laboured round of jumping when winning at Warwick -- since when the world and his wife have not stopped slating him. The bookies, running scared of Finian's Rainbow until then, are suddenly desperate to lay him.

It's tempting to close out the betting position for a profit, but that would be gutless. Besides, what else in the race can be backed with conviction?

Medermit, which has supplanted Finian's Rainbow as favourite, was no match for Hell's Bay after the latter was beaten pointless by Finian's Rainbow at Newbury. And various formlines suggest Ghizao, Captain Chris and Medermit are all closely matched.

On top of that, Finian's Rainbow's Warwick victory was gained from Stagecoach Pearl, which had won four of its five previous starts.

The runes thus point to a Finian's Rainbow triumph. Those who rebuke the selection's jumping at Warwick also fail to point out that Barry Geraghty wasn't aboard that day -- as he was for the horse's two victories earlier in this season.

Fear not if you failed to take that early 12/1. If the bookies are true to their word, there should be plenty of 5/1 available today.

Jump aboard and watch the race with your eyes closed, as it were. This horse has so much natural talent that he cannot be passed over here.
