Promotion: Everyone needs a second chance, Ireland’s largest independent bookmaker, are refunding bets on second placed horses in the first four races of the Cheltenham Festival – the Supreme Novices’, Arkle, Festival Handicap Chase and Champion Hurdle – a decision which could cost them over €1 million.

Cue Card, Medermit, Bensalem and Binocular are all hot favourites in the opening four races and if they all finished second will be facing a bumper payout.

Last year Get Me Out Of Here was second in the Supreme Novices’ at 9/2, Somersby finished runner-up in the Arkle at 4/1, the 9/2 favourite The Package was just pipped in the Festival Handicap Chase and 7/1 shot Khyber Kim finished second to Binocular in the Champion Hurdle.

Leon Blanche, Head of PR, comments: “Since the launch of this offer we have had unprecedented business on these four races as the punters flock to take advantage of our offer. If the favourites all finish second we are looking down the barrel of a €1 million plus payout.

"For the first time ever we’re going to be just as nervous to see who crosses the line in second place as to see who wins.

"In hindsight we may have looked to exclude the Champion Hurdle from this offer as we don’t see how we can get out of what looks an almost certain hiding – it’s such a strong market with everything attracting money we will be hoping for a 66/1 rag to get across the line in second and get us out of the predicament we have created for ourselves. Being an Irish Bookmaker, Hurricane Fly would be the nightmare runner up.”
