AP McCoy to ride Sir Des Champs in Gold Cup
AP MCoy will ride Sir Des Champs in today's Betfred Gold Cup after Davy Russell suffered a punctured lung and was ruled out of racing.
Russell has been ruled out with a punctured lung after suffering a fall on Wednesday from Un Beau Matin in the Coral Cup.
McCoy's original ride, Sunnyhillboy, has been declared a late non-runner by trainer Jonjo O'Neill due to an unsatisfactory scope.
Willie Mullins is ecstatic with Sir Des Champs preparations but knows how difficult it will be to win the race.
"He's going well and improving all season," he said. "He likes the course, he'll like the ground and on form, he's up there with the best of them. Let's hope he's good enough.
"He's two out of two (at Cheltenham). Bobs Worth is four out of four and he's got pretty good form going in there. If he can run his usual good race there, it's all to play for.
"If he can just keep those errors out of his jumping, he has every chance.
"He's a top-class horse but he's in against top-class horses and you don't win Gold Cups easily."
It had been thought that either Bryan Cooper or Paul Townend would take the ride.
