Buick delighted to get Oxx seal of approval

William Buick's five Royal Ascot winners clearly did not go unnoticed on this side of the Irish Sea, with John Oxx booking the jockey to ride Akeed Mofeed in the Irish Derby tomorrow.

Buick will do a full day's work with five rides at Newmarket before flying over for the Derby, which is the last race on the card at 7.40. Then, on Sunday, he rides Izzi Top here in the Pretty Polly Stakes for John Gosden.

Akeed Mofeed, which met with a setback earlier this spring, will be making his seasonal debut having shown promise as a two year-old, finishing second in the Beresford Stakes on heavy ground. Johnny Murtagh has chosen the Oxx stable's other runner, Born To Sea.

"It's fantastic, a big step forward," Buick said yesterday. "It's a real pleasure to get these call-ups, particularly for such a good firm."

Meanwhile, the meetings scheduled for Tipperary and Leicester yesterday were cancelled due to waterlogged tracks, while the Newcastle card was abandoned after just four races. Tonight's fixture at the track has also been abandoned and prospects for tomorrow's Northumberland Plate card will be assessed this morning. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
