bookies take a royal hit

Bookmakers were left on the ropes after day one of Royal Ascot as punters came out on top in sunshine.

Wins for Canford Cliffs, Frankel, Power and Frederick Engels hit the layers where it hurts.

Power gave Aidan O'Brien his first winner of the week under a strong drive from Ryan Moore at 4/1.

Possibly the best-supported horse of the day, however, was Frederick Engels in the Windsor Castle Stakes, backed from a morning price of 4/1 into 9/4 favouritism.

Paddy Power were hit particularly badly by the Coventry Stakes winner Power, with the bookie saying: "I can't really whinge, with the Power name, I should have seen it coming!"
