Bold addition well treated

Julian Muscat

As if the Paddy Power wasn't sufficiently fiendish, Channel 4 Racing is broadcasting three other big-field handicaps in an effort to empty our wallets. The upside is that just one winner is likely to fund the day's punting.

For that, I entrust my hard-earned to Bold Addition in the Ultima Novices' Handicap Hurdle (3.40) over two miles. The five-year-old, always highly regarded by Paul Nicholls, returned with a nasty cut when beaten at Hereford 11 months ago. He has been given plenty of time and looks more than fairly treated on his handicap debut.

Gordon Elliott will fancy his chances of winning the Jardine Handicap Hurdle (3.10) with Supercede, which upped his game over this course last time when chasing home Aiteen Thirtythree. However, the English handicapper has come down hard on Supercede, which must now concede 9lbs to the progressive Ackertac. The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained five-year-old, which has excelled since he was stepped up in trip, has not stopped improving.

Junior is a speculative choice for the Morson Handicap Chase (1.55) after the David Pipe-trained gelding showed improved form on the Flat this summer. Despite winning his share as a novice over fences last term, his chase rating remains some way below the one he achieved over hurdles.

Meanwhile, over at Wetherby, Vodka Brook can defy top weight in the Handicap Chase (3.25). A progressive novice last season, the seven-year-old showed plenty of zest on his reappearance and looks a safer proposition than Gilsland, which is visored for the first time.
