A veteran American jockey has landed himself in hot water by using an electric shock device on his horse.

Roman Chapa  has been charged with unlawful influence on racing after being allegedly caught in the act of using the device in a photo taken near the finish line.

The 43-year-old was pictured by track photographer Jack Coady during a $50,000 race when riding Quiet Acceleration to victory at Sam Houston Park.

Horse racing website the Pauliuck Report then published details about the race using the picture taken close to the finish.

According to police documents, Chapa contacted Coady demanding he take the photo down from the website because “it was a bad picture”.

The jockey is now facing a felony charge.

Flat racing jockey Darryll Holland was among those to react on Twitter.
