For the next five weeks, the Boylesports Derby will dominate the greyhound racing landscape.

In all, there will be 57 races and less than half an hour of racing action, but there really is nothing like it in the world of greyhound racing.

The opening round draws to a conclusion this evening and the 13 heats should provide some spectacular performances with the likes of Magical Bale, Wolfe, Killmacdonagh and Lenson Bocko expected to justify their lofty position in the sponsor's outright betting.

Magical Bale, in particular, is on a Derby mission. He went desperately close last year, finishing just a half-length behind Ballyanne Sim in the €140,000 decider.

Tonight, he looks certain to get his Derby campaign off to a winning start in Heat 20.

Although he would prefer a draw off the fence, the Pat Guilfoyle-trained Magical Bale should have too much ammunition for his rivals, which include his talented kennel companion Laughil Josh and former Produce Stakes winner Cash Is King.

Killmacdonagh can do no wrong this year, but she faces a stiff test in Heat 15.

Ballymac Syd and Newinn Lester are hugely talented, but one suspects the brilliant Killmacdonagh will continue her winning sequence from an ideal draw on the rail.

Wolfe looks one of the bankers of the night in the opening heat. He is understandably amongst the favourites for Derby glory and should have far too much ammunition for his rivals.
