It is 47 years since a British-trained greyhound managed to win the Irish Derby but Droopys Verve goes to traps this evening as the 12/1 favourite with the sponsors to win the 2018 BoyleSports Irish Derby at Shelbourne Park.

Representing the Angela Harrison/Jimmy Wright team, Droopys Verve (10.10) has already run-up the English Derby final and came to Dundalk to win the International over a month ago.

Tonight he will go into action in Heat 9 in the first session of qualifiers and he will need to produce a top-class performance if he is consolidate his position in the market.

His main rivals are likely to be Frisky Luck and Cashen Kuba and it promises to be quite a battle. All three can qualify in heats which will see the first four qualifying for the next round.

A number of the leading fancies will be on show in the first session. Punters can get off the winning mark in Heat 1 where Johnny O'Sullivan's Native Chimes (8.10) should score with authority. Graham Holland's Slippy Cian (8.40) and Skywalker Rafa are set for a battle royal in Heat 3 and 'Slippy' may emerge on top .

Trainer Peter Cronin should get the classic off to a perfect start with the progressive Crossfield Will (8.55) in Heat 4 and then his English Derby finalist Whoops Jack (9.55) in Heat 8.
