Tralee's €13,000 Juvenile Classic deferred for week
Earlier this week we reported on postponements due to the continuing cold weather conditions but now we have news of the country's most valuable unraced sweepstake being deferred by a week due to lack of entries.
The €13,000-to-the-winner GMHD Juvenile Classic was due to commence at Tralee tomorrow night but was put back a week due to the lack of entries. It was advertised for 48 dogs but up to Tuesday afternoon had attracted only a little over half that number. So, the decision was taken to put the event back by a week.
Now racing manager Kieran Casey hopes to run the event for 36 dogs closing next Tuesday at lunchtime. Speaking yesterday, Casey said: "I feel it was just too early and people are not inclined to get the track dogs ready until after Clonmel. The weather hasn't been a help either and we again had to cancel trials today.
"Already I have received a few since yesterday and at the moment we have about 30 in the book. I don't think we will have any problem running it for 36 next week".
Shelbourne Park has escaped the worst of the frost and Declan Carey reports no problems there yet. So racing can resume this evening with a card that has a few likely sorts for the punters.
A litter that has been capturing the headlines of late is that bred by Larry Dunne from Kildallon Maid's litter to Brett Lee. One member yet to win but likely to put the record straight tonight is Slippery Snowy (8.42) which turns up in an A4 contest and looks a very likely winner. He was turned over at the corner last time but this one will appreciate an inside draw and is banker material in this contest.
With Enniscorthy track closed for racing until next week, Wexford runners have been pretty plentiful at Shelbourne in recent times and Pat Whelan's Salmon Ellie (8.00) looks a likely winner of the opening contest. This one ran on after being in trouble early last time. Others worth supporting are Honey Pop (8.15) and Fast Fit Rocky (9.38).
Trials were called off at tracks all over the country yesterday due to frozen tracks and already the Official trials due to be staged today at Enniscorthy have been called off.
The next Official trials session at the Showgrounds will be on Monday next between 1.45 and 2.15pm.
Tralee have also called off their Unrecorded trials due to be staged this morning.
The Inter Track schedule will see tonight's Shelbourne Park card shown while tomorrow night there will be coverage from HX and Tralee and then on Saturday it will be Shelbourne and Tralee.
