Things didn't go exactly according to plan in the final of the Kirby Memorial at Limerick on Saturday when the Robert Gleeson-trained Toolmaker Josie sprang a 6-1 surprise in winning the €80,000 prize.

Liam Dowling was expected to play a huge role in the final but one of his runners, Ballymac Syd, was withdrawn due to an injury and then his sister, Ballymac Tas, the favourite, had a nightmare passage and never got in a blow at the leaders.

Deadly Storm and Toolmaker Josie displayed the best early pace and Toolmaker shot clear around the opening bend as Deadly Storm was baulked.

Herecomesdahoney now moved second and made little inroads on the leader until the third bend. The pursuer then closed significantly but Toolmaker had a cosy length in hand at the line for owner Willie Hyslop in 28.37.
