St Leger laurels go to Sonic and Yankee
Sonic, an Irish Derby finalist for the past two seasons, came right back to top form when winning the second semi-final of the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger at Limerick on Saturday.
The Graham Holland trained Sonic tracked his kennel companion Droopys Cabaye for the first half of the race but then moved to the front and pulled away for a three length margin over Droopys Cabaye in 29.64. Black Eyed Peppa ran on strongly to be a length third.
The first semi went to Paul Hennessy's Jaytee Yankee which rode a first bend bump to lead into the back.
The Champion Stakes winner kept on strongly for a length verdict over Ballybough Dad in 30.00 and it was another three lengths to Clonbrien Hero.
The final draw is: 1 Black Eyed Peppa 2 Jaytee Yankee 3 Clonbrien Hero (m) 4 Ballybough Dad (w) 5 Sonic (w) 6 Droopys Cabaye (w).
Declan Byrne's Crohane Ronnie (6/1) caused an upset in the Gain Select Stakes at Waterford as he beat Coco Blaze by a neck in 28.49.
Peter Cronin's Cometwopass made his early pace tell as he led from the first bend in the second heat for a length margin over Falcon Bay in 28.79.
The last heat was won by Drive On Mike, who came with a late flurry to pip Kingsmill Manuka by a short head in 29.34.
Jimmy Buckley had the fastest winner in the semi-finals of the Fennelly Memorial Bitch Stake at Curraheen when Jumeirah Lolls won in 28.20.
