Marathon queen Tradition forced to retire
Ireland's supreme stayer Tradition has run her last race after sustaining a career-ending injury in last Friday's Track Bookmakers Marathon first round at Harold's Cross. She is now destined for a career in the breeding paddocks.
Winner of the HX Marathon the previous year, she was regarded as a hot favourite to defend her title but the challenge ended just after the second bend in her heat as she checked badly and then trailed in at the back of the field.
Owner Pat Dalton confirmed yesterday that the bitch damaged a metatarsal above the toe line.
A daughter of the remarkable stayer Flying Winner, Tradition emulated her mother when winning the Bookmakers Marathon in 2015 and actually broke her dam's track record in that contest".
The top four in the reckoning for the Marathon now are Roxholme Magic, Jaytee Patriot, Ribble Atom and Skywalker Rossa. The second round will be run on Friday.
Enniscorthy was due to stage its first Friday meeting last week, but frost caused it to be postponed at a late stage and that card will now be run on Thursday.
The first Friday meeting will be staged there this week and there will be another on Friday week, December 16.
