Jack can whoop it up in Champion final
On a hectic day for sport in Dublin, a huge crowd will throng Shelbourne Park this evening for a high-class card which features the final of the BoyleSports Champion Stakes.
The market suggests that betting will be close between the Peter Cronin-trained Whoops Jack and Pat Guilfoyle's Good News - they are 9/4 joint-favourites with the sponsors.
I suspect that Whoops Jack will shade favouritism on the track, with punters likely to be influenced by his lightning starts of the past two Saturdays.
Indeed, if he can repeat those flying starts it is doubtful if there is a greyhound around capable of matching him over the 550 yards distance.
But consistency has not always been a word you could associate with the Larry O'Shea-owned Whoops Jack.
Nevertheless, the draw has been favourable and the dog inside him, Coolavanny Mason, is likely to be seeking an inside route.
Tom Buggy's Kilgraney Ace is well drawn in six and will stay out wide. He is real each-way value at 12/1 but both Jaytee Yankee and Coolavanny Mason may struggle from their middle draws.
That leaves us with Drive On Tipp and Good News and it would be no surprise if the inside draw brings the best out of Drive On Tipp.
It is a terrific prep-race for the Derby, and Whoops Jack can score at the expense of Drive On Tipp and Kilgraney Ace.
Another highlight at Shelbourne will be Clares Rocket's reappearance in an open 550. It will be his first race since his Towcester campaign and he will have it tough against the bitch Holycross Leah.
The semi-finals of the Thurles Fresh Milk Tipperary Cup will be run at Thurles and the likely winners are the Michael O'Donovan-trained Skywalker Manner and Fraser Black's Droopys Awesome.
