Good News to foil Sonic in derby decider
The pinnacle of the greyhound year will attract a huge crowd to Shelbourne Park this evening with the final of the BoyleSports Irish Derby the highlight of a 13-race programme.
Gates will open at 4pm and the atmosphere will be terrific right through to close to midnight with the cream of the trackers in action.
Derby favouritism rests between Good News and Sonic in the chase for the €150,000 prize. But the history of this great event is littered with surprises as the odds are regularly turned over in the big race.
The Graham Holland-trained Sonic went off as favourite in last year's final but a missed start proved costly as he finished strongly to finish third behind kennel companion Rural Hawaii. He has a perfect draw in six this evening but he has been known to miss the start and that could prove his undoing.
Good News, trained by Pat Guilfoyle for his sister Sandra and the breeder Mary Kennedy, has enjoyed a very high profile since the start of his racing career. He hasn't had much luck in the bigger finals thus far but his turn could have arrived.
Evergreen Jaytee Jet never runs a bad one and is bidding to become the second greyhound to do the English and Irish Derby double.
He's not without his chance and similarly, Hey Bound, Black Farren and Buckos Dream all have serious prospects. However, I reckon it will be Good News time for the Guilfoyle/ Kennedy team.
