Borna Gin digs deep in Gold Cup thriller
The much-anticipated battle between Borna Gin and Skywalker Rafa lived up to its billing in Saturday's Best Car Parks Gold Cup second round at Shelbourne Park.
Borna Gin had posted the fastest time of the first round, but he appeared to be on his way to defeat when Skywalker went four lengths clear by halfway in the third heat.
It was at this stage that Borna Gin displayed his growing stature as he began to close on the leader - which had won the Dublin Coach Juvenile Derby last year. It was only in the final stride that Borna Gin got his nose in front, as he was adjudged to be a head winner from Skywalker Rafa in 28.50. Titus Spirit was third.
It was quite a night for trainer Pat Buckley, as Coolavanny Mason led all the way when winning the second heat from Gurteen Feather in 28.55, while he narrowly missed out on a heat treble as Pennylane Lucky was headed in the final yards when beaten a head by Owen McKenna's Dumas in the final heat in 28.54.
The opening heat saw the Tom Buggy trained Kilgraney Master maintain his unbeaten run in the stake, beating the strong finishing Ballybough Murt by a length-and-a-half in 28.64.
