'Bocko' favourite for Derby final
Shelbourne Park will be at full capacity this evening for the final of the Boylesports Derby. After Our Surprise was withdrawn, only five will go to traps in the €140,000 contest and Lenson Bocko is set to start as one of the hottest favourites of the past 50 years.
The Graham Holland-trained star has been flawless in his last three starts and could be as short as 4/6 at the off.
The brilliant son of Droopys Jet has all the qualities required of a Derby champion and those involved will be hoping he won't be overawed.
Killmacdonagh is perhaps best equipped to challenge. Already the Oaks and International winner, she has incredible pace and power and has also been handed an ideal draw on the fence. If Lenson Bocko were to make a mistake, however small, the Kieran Lynch-trained bitch would be ready to pounce.
Boylesports King will also prove popular. The youngest finalist packs a potent finishing kick and, were he to turn close to the pace, he would be involved at the finish.
Run Happy and Mucky Brae complete the line up. Both are blessed with fine early speed, but would need to dictate.
In short, there is no occasion that compares to Derby final night. Should Lenson Bocko handle the crowd and the famed Derby roar, he will take the world of beating. Killmacdonagh is nominated as the alternative.
You can catch all the action on RTÉ 2, live from 9pm.
