Astute Cahill scores shock derby win
Seamus Cahill learned the greyhound trade at an early age but his career reached its zenith on Saturday when Astute Missile raced into the history books as the longest-priced winner ever of the English Greyhound Derby.
It was a bad night for the Irish team with Ballinclare Lady our only winner but our Derby finalists Tyrur Shay and Clares Rocket had to settle for second and third behind Astute Missile.
Clares Rocket broke slowly and was immediately closed off by Astute Missile and Droopys Acrobat. He eventually did very well to finish third.
Astute Missile led around the bend but PJ Fahy's Tyrur Shay looked a likely winner when a good third down the back. He went past Hiya Butt on the final bend but couldn't overhaul Astute Missile which won by three parts of a length in 28.92. Clares Rocket was four-and-a-half lengths back in third.
Star performer in the Irish Independent Irish Laurels at Curraheen Park was Paul Hennessy's Barefoot Painter as he led all the way to clock 28.20. The ante-post favourite Clonbrien Hero tracked superbly to win from Chawke It Down in 28.23, while reigning champion Skywalker Manner came back to form when winning in 28.32. The draw for the quarter-finals has thrown a number of the fancies together in the first heat.
