Greyhound Racing: Vanrooney to kick on towards Night of Stars

Michael Fortune

Following his astonishing victory in the final of the Bookmakers Puppy Derby at Harold's Cross on Friday night, Vanrooney is now to be aimed at the Night of Stars at Shelbourne Park on Saturday, November 30.

Vanrooney was anything between six and eight lengths off the pace set by Newlawn Impact in the final on Friday night but then produced an electrifying burst of pace that saw him hit the front strides before the line for a half-length margin over Newlawn.

There had been suggestions that the Kerry Agribusiness Irish St Leger at Limerick would be an obvious target for the dog, particularly given the dog's knowledge of the circuit.

However, trainer Owen McKenna discussed the matter with owners Keith Doherty and Peter O'Toole and they have decided on the Shelbourne route.

McKenna explained: "He has had a busy enough time between his three runs over 600 yards at Limerick, his trial at Harold's Cross and then the five runs in the Puppy Derby. The Leger would have been a lot on top of that.

"So, we will give him a trial at Shelbourne in a couple of weeks and then hopefully have a crack at the Night of Stars".

The early signs for the Irish St Leger are very encouraging with a number of potential challengers being trialled in advance of next Tuesday morning's closing date.

Dual Derby finalist Tyrur Sugar Ray clocked 29.48 for the 550 yards in a trial on Saturday while over the 525 trip the fastest was General Wolf in 28.14, Roxholme Bully in 28.32, Cabra Buck in 28.37 and Mind The Net in 28.52.

The bookmakers are counting on a Cork winner of the Red Mills Irish Laurels final at Curraheen Park on Saturday with Glenanore Dancer quoted a best price 6/4 by Boylesports to land the Classic. Cathys Clown and Lassa Expedition are vying for second favouritism.

The best odds available are: 6/4 Glenanore Dancer, 11/4 Cathys Clown, 3 Lassa Expedition, 9/2 Refuge Of Sinner, 25 Footprintsinsand, Parkgate Jet.

There was quality racing in the Michael Fitzpatrick Memorial Oaks at the weekend and betting is very open in advance of Saturday's semi-finals. Carrowgarriff and Tyrur Annaleen share the top spot at 7/2, with impressive second-round winners Farkland Mist and Ketch Up Bell on 5/1 and 6/1 respectively. Then we have 7 Donanes Facebook, 8 Billis Adare, 10 Tasmanic Jaxx, 20 Buttermaid, Danmar Mini, 25 Our Little Mix, 40 Ballycowen Hero, Ring The Guards.

The final of the Laurels will be shown live on TG4 on Saturday night in a special 'Greyhound View Live' programme between 9.0 and 10.0. The final is at 9.45.
