Ulster pair must up ante to improve pointedly
HISTORY says Rory McIlroy needs a top-seven finish at this week's BMW Championship to have any chance of finishing his grim PGA Tour campaign with a flourish.
Currently 41st in the FedEx Cup table as he prepares for the defence of his BMW title at Conway Farms near Chicago, McIlroy has to pick up at least 420 points on Sunday to force his way into the 30-man field at The Tour Championship.
Since the FedEx Cup started in 2007, it has taken an average 1,556 points to make the Atlanta finale.
Graeme McDowell, 48th in the current table, must get into the top-six on Sunday to have a chance of playing for the $10m FedEx top prize.
Incidentally, McIlroy bounced over Justin Rose and back to world No 4 yesterday without hitting a shot last weekend.
