Former Irish Youth international Niall Turner earned a share of the first round lead in the Northern Ireland Open sponsored by Sphere Global and Ulster Bank at Galgorm Castle yesterday.

Turner was joined at the head of the leaderboard after scoring an opening 65, six-under par, by 2013 tournament winner Dan Huizing of Holland, Haydn Porteous (South Africa), John Hahn (USA), and Spain's Emilio Cuartero Blanco.

Another Irishman, Simon Thornton, was in a group of 11 just one shot behind the leaders on 66.

Former European Tour winner Peter Lawrie was the next best placed of the home contingent on three-under par.

Michael Hoey, the Tournament Ambassador, opened with a one-under-par 70 as the five-time European Tour winner attempts to make the weekend's play at his home event for the first time in three years.

With 78 players under par on day one, the pressure is on today to make the cut for the second round.

Huizing hopes to make the most of his previous winning experience at Galgorm Castle.

"I'm in the lead, but there's a lot of golf left," he said.
