Westport gets All Ireland dress rehearsal with AIG Connacht Finals
Westport will host the All Ireland Finals from September 20-22 but the spectacular Mayo club will get a trial run this weekend when it hosts the Connacht Golf AIG Cups and Shields Finals.
The action begins tomorrow with the AIG Junior Cup as Enniscrone face Loughrea and Westport meet Galway in the semi-finals.
Enniscrone, Tubbercurry, Athenry and Oughterard face off in the GOLFSTYLE Kenny Cup Irish U18 Boys Final before the Junior Cup final is played in the afternoon.
The AIG Barton Shield semi-finals will be played on Saturday morning with Enniscrone taking on Co. Sligo and Galway meeting All Ireland champions Athenry.
This will be followed by the AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield Semi-finals - Westport v Roscommon and Carrick on Shannon v Athenry - before the AIG Pierce Purcell Shield semi-final clashes of Castlebar and Ballina and Connemara Isles and Portumna.
The Barton Shield final will be played on Saturday afternoon while on Sunday morning, the AIG Senior Cup semi-finals between reigning Connnacht champions Galway and County Sligo and Athenry and Portumna will be followed by the Pierce Purcell and Jimmy Bruen finals.
The AIG Senior Cup final will then round off the weekend's action, starting at 3pm.
No stranger to championship golf, the Fred Hawtree designed course on 260 acres of the former estate lands of Westport House will prove a fitting venue for the country's keenest amateurs.
The Connacht and All Ireland finals are expected to attract in excess of 3,000 visitors to Westport Golf Club, which has been working for the last two months to make sure the course is in pristine condition.
The finals are Westport's first major GUI tournament since Rory McIlroy won the Irish Amateur Close Championship in 2005.
