Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien is top of the Seniors Order of Merit following his one-stroke win in the Connacht Senior Men’s Amateur Open at Oughterard Golf Club.

He opened with a six-under par 66 to lead by two strokes from former Shamrock Rovers footballer Neville Steedman.

Just three players broke par in the second round and O’Brien was relieved to win by one shot after a final round of 75.

“I was glad to get over the line in the end after making a few wrong decisions on the back nine of the final round,” he said, adding that the north Co Galway club was a superb venue “with fantastic greens that suited me here this week.”

Steedman, who plays out of The European Club, looked set to match O’Brien’s three-under par total before be bogeyed the 17th and signed for a 74 that left him tied for second with East Sussex National’s Steve Graham and Corrstown’s Christopher O’Connor.

O’Brien was second behind O’Connor in the Munster Senior Men’s Amateur Open in Dungarvan and 12th in the Ulster Seniors before reaching the semi-finals of the Irish Senior Men’s Close.

He is now top of the Order of Merit, almost 100 points ahead of Galway’s Joe Lyons heading into the final counting Leinster Senior Men’s Open Championship at Millicent next Monday and Tuesday.
