Joe Lyons claimed a three shot win in the 2022 Ulster Senior Men’s Open Championship at Donegal’s Murvagh links.
In his first year as a senior, the Galway golfer was the only player to finish under par in the two-day event, finishing on three-under par.
Four birdies and a solitary bogey in his opening round laid the foundations for the win and a level par 73 in his second round ensured his maiden seniors title.
Castlerock’s David Mulholland finished in second place on level par with Mourne’s Noel Crawford finishing a shot further back in third.
The recently-crowned Irish Senior Men’s Open champion, Jody Fanagan from Milltown, shot the best round on day two, matching Lyons’ opening round of 70, to finish in a tie for fourth alongside Corrstown’s Christopher O’Connor.
O’Connor won the Munster Senior Men’s Open earlier this year, as both he and Fanagan continued their impressive seasons.
Mullholland’s second place finish also saw him win the 55-59 category, with the 60-65 category shared between Portstewart’s Mark Windebank and Balbriggan’s David Brabazon.
Royal Portrush legend Garth McGimpsey won the 65+ category and finished tied 18th on 10-over par.
Lyons birdied at the first, 11th, 12th and 13th and dropped just one stroke at the second in an opening 70 to lead by one stroke from Mount Juliet’s John Reynolds.
The second round featured a hole-in-one by Peter Ewing at the third.
