GUI sends six to European Amateur

Ireland will launch a six-strong challenge for the European Amateur Championship at Diamond Country Club in Austria from June 26-29.

Portmarnock's Conor Purcell will be trying to imrprove on last year's tie for sixth alongside fellow Walker Cup panellists John Murphy (Kinsale), Mark Power (Kilkenny), Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) and James Sugrue (Mallow) with Hermitage's Rowan Lester, who tied for seventh in 2018, completing the GUI's six-man line up.

Holywood's Tom McKibbin is also expected to travel to an event that offers the winner a spot in The Open in July.

First played ins 1986, the event has produced four Irish winners with Warrenpoint's Paddy Gribben (1998), Hermitage's Stephen Browne (2001) and North West's Brian McElhinney (2003) succeeded by Rory McIlroy at Biella in Italy in 2006.
