Woodstock's Tony Cleary captured the Connacht Seniors Amateur Open at Tuam.

The event was marred by heavy rain which forced organisers to reduce the championship to just 18 holes.

The opening day was lost to the weather, and after 22 mm of rain lashed the Galway club, Connacht officials were forced to play winter rules on day two to get finished in time.

The bumper field was reduced from over 150 to 120 due to withdrawals, though that didn't bother Cleary, who was three-over-par through six holes before covering the back nine in two-under to post a one-over 73 and claim the title.

He won by two strokes from Mount Wolseley's Pat Bevins, Royal Dublin's Noel McGrane, Tuam's Alan Moran, Muskerry's Hugh O'Leary and Ardglass' Gerry Vaughan.

Malone's Barry Hobson won the 55-59-year-old category with the Tramore's Jim Mitchell the best 60-64-year-old and Co Meath's Michael Gaynor the top man over 65, and Connacht Veterans champion, thanks to his 77.
