Paul Dunne hailed the Irish soccer team's win over Italy on Wednesday night, and could not resist a wind-up of Italian playing partner Francesco La Porta in round one of the BMW International Open at Golf Club Gut Laerchendhof in Germany.

Dunne tweeted: "Ireland is the greatest country in the world, no question! So proud watching that passion! Italian playing partner 2moro makes it sweeter!"

Dunne, with Greystones pro Karl Holmes caddying for him, shot 69, three-under par, to lie four shots off the pace set by France's Raphael Jaquelin who carded 65 for a one-shot lead over England's Oliver Fisher.

And just like the Irish soccer team against the Italians, Dunne had the edge on La Porta, who shot level-par 72. Unfortunately, it's not a match-play event but Dunne has made a solid start to the tournament.
