Danny Willett sorry for brother’s rant describing American fans as 'baying mob of imbeciles'
Tensions stoked with 'mob of imbeciles' anti-US outburst
Danny Willett has apologised to USA Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III and American golf fans for insulting remarks made by his brother in a magazine article.
Pete Willett, a teacher, penned an article in National Club Golfer that was intended as humorous satire, but which failed miserably.
Willett's article included lines such as: "Team USA have only won five of the last 16 Ryder Cups. Four of those five victories have come on home soil. For the Americans to stand a chance of winning, they need their baying mob of imbeciles to caress their egos every step of the way.
"Europe need to silence the pudgy, basement-dwelling, irritants, stuffed on cookie dough and pissy beer, pausing between mouthfuls of hotdog so they can scream 'Baba booey' until their jelly faces turn red.
"They need to stun the angry, unwashed, Make America Great Again swarm, desperately gripping their concealed-carry compensators and belting out a mini-erection inducing 'mashed potato' hoping to impress their cousin."
Masters champion Danny Willett was appalled, telling the Golf Channel: "I'd just like to apologise to everyone involved for what's been said.
"It's not the thoughts of myself and of the team and of captain Darren (Clarke).
"I spoke to him (Pete) on the phone after I was made aware of what was said. And I said to Pete that I was disappointed in what was said and what was written about the American fans, who took me under their wing fantastically back in April."
