Europe team captain Paul McGinley embraces Sir Alex Ferguson on the 1st tee today

Alex Ferguson continued his support of the European Ryder Cup team when he was present on the first tee on the third and final day of action at Gleneagles.

The former Manchester United manager spoke to Paul McGinley's side during the week and again last night in a final pep talk as Europe headed into the final day with a 10-6 lead.

The Scot, a keen golfer himself, was there to witness Graeme McDowell get the singles matches underway against Jordan Spieth and embraced McGinley before the first ball was hit in anger.

McGinley revealed that Ferguson addressed the players for the final time last night along with lee Westwood, the most experienced player on the European team.
