IT felt like the Rory glory days had returned for a spell at the DP World Tour Championship.

Memories of Rory McIlroy's breathtaking Dubai victory parade 12 months ago came flooding back as he rattled off three birdies in his first four holes on the Earth Course – especially with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki applauding from the sideline.

Yet in keeping with his fruitless season, McIlroy's birdie blitz fizzled out and he settled for a frustrating first-round 71 that left him five shots off the pace.

At least the Danish tennis ace was on hand to offer soothing words as they walked away together.

"It's nice she's here," said McIlroy. "Caroline started her pre-season training a couple of days ago and was on court this morning at 7.0, so she got in some early practice before coming to see me play."

After a short break on the Maldives, Wozniacki and McIlroy have played golf and tennis together since arriving in Dubai late last week.

"My golf isn't getting any better," she quipped of her few holes on the nearby Els Course, while McIlroy looked sharp with a racquet in a picture Wozniacki posted on Twitter.
