Olazabal to be named as next Ryder captain
JOSE Maria Olazabal is the man to lead Europe against the USA in the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah, near Chicago, WRITES LIAM KELLY.
An announcement originally scheduled for Abu Dhabi in January is due before Christmas confirming the Spaniard as captain for the event.
The two-time Masters champion, who will be 45 in February, was a strong favourite for the captaincy at Celtic Manor but turned it down because he had hoped to make the team as a player.
Colin Montgomerie was then selected as captain, which worked out perfectly as Europe claimed the cup back from the Americans in Wales two months ago.
Now Olazabal is set to step into the hot seat as the USA gear up to avenge that defeat.
A former captain of the Royal Trophy team -- Europe versus Asia -- in Thailand, 'Ollie' impressed players as a Ryder Cup vice-captain to Nick Faldo at Valhalla two years ago.
He also got a late call-up from Montgomerie at Celtic Manor to assist the team on the second day of the weather-interrupted event in Wales.
Olazabal made his Ryder Cup debut in 1987. His partnership with Seve Ballesteros is the most successful in the history of the event, winning 11, halving two and losing only two of their matches together.
