Mickelson fails to make cut
PHIL MICKELSON missed the cut and Tiger Woods was battling for survival at the Greenbrier Classic as Charlie Beljan blazed into a share of the early clubhouse lead with Jonathan Byrd after a stunning second-round 62 at the Old White TPC.
Q-School graduate Beljan (27) carded the low round of his rookie season to join Byrd in the clubhouse on eight-under.
Mickelson completed back-to-back 71s to slip out of the picture on two-over, even incurring one penalty stroke for dropping his marker on his ball and moving it, Ian Poulter-style.
As a storm forced play to a halt, Woods was two outside the projected cut mark on one-over-par through eight holes of his second round, though he faced a 12-foot birdie putt at nine upon his return.
"I don't know what to say about that," Mickelson said, after mixing three birdies with two bogeys and a double-bogey at the par-three 15th. "The parts don't feel that far off, but I haven't been putting them together.
"I just don't get it," added the American left-hander, who also missed the cut here 12 months ago. "I certainly struggled a little bit on the greens both years, but nothing that should have led to these scores."
