McVeigh edges title

Danielle McVeigh showed her battling qualities by edging out home-town favourite Karen Delaney on the 19th to win a thrilling Lancome Irish Women's Close Championship at Carlow GC.

Delaney got off to a blistering start -- notching a birdie on the very first hole and quickly finding her rhythm to go four-up after seven holes.

However, there was plenty of drama to come as McVeigh notched a birdie on eight to bring the gap down to three holes and the Royal Co Down golfer also won the next to narrow the deficit further.

By the 13th, the match was all square, only for Delaney to regain the initiative, and the Carlow golfer was one-up going down the 18th.

However, McVeigh birdied the 18th with a super pressure putt and then hit a monster drive at the first play-off hole (the par-five first). Her second shot landed in the middle of the green and her two-putt birdie was enough to secure the spoils.
