Rory McIlroy has targeted the WGC-Mexico Championship from March 2-5 for his comeback from the rib injury he suffered in South Africa two weeks ago.

The world No 2 missed the Abu Dhabi Championship, and on Monday announced his withdrawal from his next scheduled tournament, the Dubai Desert Classic, to be played on February 2-5. McIlroy, speaking to Fox Sports' Shane Bacon, revealed that the stress fracture in his ribs is unlikely to be fully healed before the WGC event in Mexico City.

"I'd like to ease my way in gently," McIlroy said.

"All the signs are pointing towards Mexico being the one I could come back to and be a hundred per cent comfortable.

"Hopefully it works out that way and that's when I'll probably be back."

A return in Mexico would give McIlroy a full month of preparation before the US Masters which begins in Augusta on April 6.
