McIlroy hits disastrous 80 as Schwartzel triumphs

Rory McIlroy’s US Masters dream turned into a nightmare on the final day at Auguata National yesterday.

The Irishman went into the final round four shots clear on 12 under par, but endured a meltdown on the back nine.

The Holywood ace had a poor start to his round with two bogeys in his first five holes. He recovered with a birdie on the seventh and he was still a shot clear on 11 under after his opening nine.

But his quest for Masters glory unravelled spectacularly with a wayward tee-shot on the 10th. Things went from bad to worse on the hole as he hit a tree and ended up walking away with a triple-bogey.

He then three-putted the next hole for a bogey before disaster followed on the par three 12th when he fourputted for a double-bogey five.

The 21-year-old then suffered more ignominy when pulling his tee-shot on the 13th into the water.

McIlroy ended up shooting an 80 for four under and this left the door open for little-known South African Charl Schwartzel who fired a sensational six under par 66 to finish on 14 under par and take the green jacket.
