McElroy fires sizzling 63
Ballymena teenager Dermot McElroy gave a champagne display over the Dunluce links at Royal Portrush, carding a nine-under-par 63 to lead the qualifiers into the knockout stages of the North of Ireland Championship.
The former boys international hit five birdies in an outward 31 and five more on his way home in 32 -- his only dropped stroke came at the 13th.
His 133 aggregate for two rounds is the same as that of Belvoir Park's Harry Diamond and Conor Doran of Banbridge but he takes the No 1 seeding because of yesterday's score.
Diamond had a 65, with an eagle at the ninth.
Rising stars Reeve Whitson and Paul Dunne qualified high up, and defending champion Patrick McCrudden, of the home club, is also through.
